Does anyone else experience difficulty climbing stairs and leg pain with lupus?
Yes, this is a common experience. Lupus can cause muscle pain (myalgia) throughout the body, including the legs. This type of muscle pain typically affects areas like the thighs, but can occur anywhere. The pain and stiffness may make activities like climbing stairs particularly challenging.
Many people with lupus notice their muscle pain gets worse during flare-ups. A MyLupusTeam member shared: "I'm in the middle of a flare-up — very fatigued and aching all over."
Since you were just diagnosed, it's important to know that managing these symptoms often improves with the right treatment plan. Here are some strategies that may help:
* Rest the affected muscles when needed
* Stay physically active as your health allows
* Eat foods rich in calcium and vitamin D
* Apply cold compresses for up to 20 minutes when pain occurs
Talk with your rheumatologist about your leg pain and difficulty with stairs. They can help identify the specific cause and adjust your treatment plan. Physical therapy is often recommended for people with lupus to improve strength and overall quality of life.
It's completely normal to feel overwhelmed with a new diagnosis, but you're not alone in experiencing these symptoms.
