Yes my neurologist ordered blood work and a muscle and nerve conduction study. I’m on vit B and vit D supplements. I know hydroxychloriquine has a long half life. I stopped it about 4 months ago. Improvement so far is questionable- maybe a little? I’m told I may have some or full recovery from this

I'm sorry you're experiencing this, Carol. This is a rare side effect, and I'm sure your doctor ruled out other possible causes/contributors such as diabetes, thyroid disease, vitamin B12 deficiency, lupus, etc. I hope it resolves completely off the medication.

Has anyone else experienced neuropathy from hydroxychloroquine?
It sounds like your rheumatologist made the right call by stopping the medication. While neuropathy isn't listed among the most common side effects of hydroxychloroquine, serious side effects like muscle weakness and nerve-related issues can occur, and stopping the medication when these develop is important.
Many MyLupusTeam members have shared experiences about stopping hydroxychloroquine due to various side effects. Some reported that their symptoms improved after discontinuing the medication, while others experienced lupus flares when they stopped.
When stopping hydroxychloroquine, you might notice:
- Return of lupus symptoms like joint pain, fatigue, or rashes
- Potential flare-ups within weeks to months
- Changes in how your other medications work
Your doctor will likely adjust your treatment plan and may prescribe alternative medications to manage your lupus while avoiding further nerve damage. It's important to monitor how you feel after stopping and report any new symptoms or worsening lupus activity to your rheumatologist.
Have you noticed any improvement in the neuropathy since stopping, or has your doctor discussed alternative treatments for managing your lupus?
