I have been taking Plaquenil for 3 years. My Dr doesn't think its associated with my eye's light sensitivity, but I thought I'd ask. I've noticed over the last year that I have become more sensitive when its dark and I'm driving with headlights or in movie theaters when the light changes. I've been looking for solutions to help with this but have struck out with special glasses, sunglasses (not preferred while driving at night), etc. I'm open to options.

thanks!!

Please see your ophthalmologist or get a second opinion. Be persistent about the problem you are having with light sensitivity. It could be anything, but I highly suggest you get your eyes checked out.

Are you experiencing light sensitivity at night while driving, and could Plaquenil be related?

Light sensitivity is a common symptom with lupus, and it's understandable to wonder about Plaquenil's role. While Plaquenil is actually known to reduce some damaging effects of UV light, it can have eye-related side effects with long-term use that might affect vision.

Plaquenil can potentially cause:
* High pressure inside the eye
* Slower healing of eye injuries
* Other vision changes over time

The increased sensitivity to headlights and changing light in dark environments you're describing could be related to lupus itself, medication effects, or other eye conditions. Since you've been on Plaquenil for 3 years, it's worth having a thorough eye exam with an ophthalmologist who can check for any medication-related changes.

Some MyLupusTeam members have reported similar experiences with light sensitivity, particularly noting that "the sunlight is definitely not my friend" and experiencing burning sensations with light exposure.

Since special glasses haven't helped and this is affecting your safety while driving, it's important to follow up with both your rheumatologist and an eye specialist. They can determine if this is lupus-related photosensitivity, a medication side effect, or another treatable eye condition.
