I agree with others that you shouldn't stress over this, Retanda. I think that when our families are in denial about our disease, it's often because it's too painful to face our suffering. The invisibility of our disease is a factor, too, as we often look fine.

You can suggest that they learn about lupus, but if they still don't understand, you might gently tell them you won't discuss it further.😘

It is very sad and hard, but,we can only say" look it up" on Google if you don't believe... I've been struggling for about 9 years with Lupus and other auto immune disorders that follow, all I have is my faith in God and his Mercy and help from others that are not my family, so you're not alone and stay positive for your own sake and faster healing of the emotions.

I'm sorry it is hard fr your family to understand or believe you. The previous comment says education. I think in today's time there are more resources like this one to direct your family member to. Keep talking and showing them. Family deep down doesn't want you to suffer. Best to you πŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œ

How can you help family members understand and believe your lupus diagnosis?

It's incredibly frustrating when family doesn't believe you're sick, especially when lupus doesn't always show on the outside. Many MyLupusTeam members face this challenge and have found ways to address it.

Education is key. Consider sharing resources about lupus with your family:
* Buy books or DVDs about lupus for them to read
* Invite them to doctor's appointments so they can hear directly from your healthcare provider
* Explain that lupus affects your immune system and causes real, physical symptoms that come and go unpredictably

Set clear boundaries. You don't need to prove your illness. Try responses like:
* "Lupus doesn't always show on the outside, but it affects my whole body"
* "I'm not looking for opinions on whether I'm sick. I'm managing it with my doctors"

Bring witnesses. Take family members to appointments so they can witness what's happening and become advocates for you rather than skeptics.

One MyLupusTeam member shared success after educating their family: they bought educational materials and now have "the most awesome support system ever." Another noted that once family members understood lupus better, several were even diagnosed with autoimmune conditions themselves after recognizing similar symptoms.
