My rheumatologist recommended taking 2 caps folic acid )each 400 mcg) and one cap N-acetyl-l-cysteine (600mg) every day and this has helped me tremendously over the last 15 years. Also, i do warm salt water gargles and i add some hydrogen peroxide to my mouthwash.

Controlling our lupus is the best approach, Isis. If you're having pain that keeps you from eating, you can ask your doctor about viscous lidocaine, which numbs your mouth before meals.

What are the best treatments for lupus mouth lesions and oral ulcers?

Managing lupus mouth sores involves both controlling your overall lupus and treating the sores directly. Keeping your lupus well-controlled through your prescribed treatment plan, a balanced diet, and staying active as your energy allows is one of the best ways to reduce recurrent mouth sores.

For direct treatment of mouth and nose ulcers, several options can help:

Over-the-counter options:
- Mild, alcohol-free mouthwash or saltwater rinses (dissolve half a teaspoon of salt in warm water, swish for up to 10 seconds)
- Topical numbing gels or rinses containing benzocaine to reduce pain

Prescription treatments:
- Medicated mouthwash with chlorhexidine or dexamethasone to reduce bacteria and inflammation
- Topical steroid paste or ointment, such as triamcinolone dental paste
- Corticosteroid pills if topical steroids aren't effective
- Topical calcineurin inhibitors (like pimecrolimus cream or tacrolimus ointment) for sensitive areas to avoid skin thinning from long-term steroid use

Additional management tips:
- Maintain good oral hygiene with regular dental checkups
- Use a soft-bristle toothbrush and gentle, fluoride toothpaste
- Avoid acidic or spicy foods when you have active ulcers
- Talk to your doctor about whether any medications might be contributing to the sores

A MyLupusTeam member shared using an anesthetic or numbing agent before eating to help with painful mouth sores.
