Can you develop an allergy to hydroxychloroquine after taking it for several years?

Yes, it's possible to develop allergic reactions to hydroxychloroquine even after taking it for years. A MyLupusTeam member shared a similar experience: "Been on Plaquenil continuously for 18 years. Recently I've been experiencing unexplained welts and itching all over that lasts for about two or three hours and only goes away after Benadryl."

Common signs of allergic reactions include:
* Itching anywhere on your body
* Rash or hives
* Swelling in your throat, lips, tongue, or face

Since your symptoms come and go unexpectedly, it's important to work with your doctor to determine if they're truly from hydroxychloroquine or possibly from lupus itself, as itching and rashes can also be lupus symptoms.

Contact your rheumatologist right away to discuss your symptoms. They can evaluate whether you're experiencing an allergic reaction and advise whether you should continue the medication, adjust your dosage, or try antihistamines to manage the symptoms.

Don't stop taking hydroxychloroquine suddenly without medical guidance, as this can trigger lupus flares.
