Have you experienced hives after starting hydroxychloroquine?

Yes, hives are a known allergic reaction to hydroxychloroquine, and they can occur early in treatment. A MyLupusTeam member shared a similar experience: "I spent all day in the emergency department yesterday after my face and neck swelled right up overnight, with severe hives all over." Another member's wife developed "hivelike rashes on her body" after taking Plaquenil for approximately two weeks.

Hives can appear alone or alongside other allergy symptoms like itching and swelling. Since you've only been on the medication for two days and are already experiencing itchy hives, this could be an early sign of an allergic reaction.

What you should do:

Contact your rheumatologist right away to report these symptoms. They can help determine if this is truly an allergic reaction and advise whether you should stop taking the medication or try managing the symptoms with antihistamines.

Watch for more serious signs that would require immediate medical attention, including:
- Swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat
- Difficulty breathing
- Fast heart rate or changes in heart rhythm

Your doctor may recommend switching medications or adjusting your treatment plan to avoid further reactions.
