I've been on it for about 15 years. It works for me. The major side effect is on the eyes. You have to get a yearly eye exam. It can cause damage to your eyes. Your doctor should recommend a optometrist and order these test.

I’ve been fortunate so far. I have taken it for 27 years with no side effects at all! Thank God. Get your eyes checked often and base the dose on your weight.

What are the side effects of hydroxychloroquine for lupus?

Hydroxychloroquine is generally well-tolerated, and most people experience very few side effects. When side effects do occur, they're usually mild and often improve as your body adjusts to the medication.

Common side effects include:

* Upset stomach or nausea
* Loss of appetite
* Stomach cramps or abdominal pain
* Vomiting
* Diarrhea
* Headache
* Feeling weak or tired
* Hair loss
* Ringing in the ears

Taking hydroxychloroquine with food or milk can help prevent stomach upset. These symptoms typically go away on their own once your body gets used to the drug. Rare but serious side effects require immediate medical attention:

* Depression
* Severe fatigue or muscle weakness
* Abnormal heart rhythm
* Vision problems or blurred vision (retinopathy from long-term use)
* Severe skin reactions
* Low blood sugar

Because hydroxychloroquine can rarely damage the retina with long-term use or high doses, you'll need regular eye exams while taking this medication. Your doctor will monitor you with regular checkups to ensure the medication is working safely.

Despite these potential side effects, hydroxychloroquine is considered one of the safest lupus medications, and many people take it for years with good results.
