So about a week ago I started having what I would call a weird sensation in the back of my throat. It's not like a sore throat, but it is pain. When I bend over or take a deep breath I have a pain that I can only describe as a deep ache in the back of my throat. It gets better if I take Tylenol and I feel like it kind of comes and goes. I went and had my chiropractor work on my neck, thinking maybe it was being caused by something out of place. Just wondering if anyone has experienced anything… read more

Teresa, this sounds unusual, and I would have your doctor examine you. An ENT may be even better, as they can use a laryngoscope for a deeper look.

Please be cautious about neck manipulation. Chiropractors can be very helpful with back problems, but serious injuries to blood vessels and the spinal cord have rarely resulted from their neck treatment.

Are you experiencing a deep ache in your throat that comes and goes, especially when bending over or taking deep breaths?

Many MyLupusTeam members report unusual throat sensations with lupus. One member described "pain in my throat when I swallow, but not like a sore throat from an illness" during flares. Another mentioned feeling "like a constant lump in my throat" with swollen lymph nodes.

Several lupus-related factors could cause your symptoms:

Swollen lymph nodes are common during lupus flares and can create pressure in your throat, causing discomfort. Members report these nodes can swell in the neck area and may get larger during flares.

Thyroid issues occur more frequently in people with lupus. Thyroid nodules can cause throat tightness and discomfort, especially when bending or moving your neck.

Reflux or GERD can cause throat pain that worsens with certain positions like bending over. This is worth considering, especially since you've had GI symptoms since December.

Infections are also more common with lupus due to immune system changes, though your symptoms don't sound like a typical infection.

It's really difficult to know what's lupus-related and what isn't—you're not alone in that frustration. Given that your symptoms have persisted for a week and you're experiencing new GI issues, it's important to contact your rheumatologist. They can evaluate whether this is related to a lupus flare, thyroid problems, reflux, or something else entirely.
