I have been having this issue since I was in my teenage years and seems to be getting worse. The doctor has me set up for an upper GI to see what's wrong.

Do you experience coughing fits when drinking water or other non-alcoholic beverages, or even just when swallowing?

While the search results don't specifically address coughing fits when drinking or swallowing, some MyLupusTeam members have reported throat-related symptoms that might feel similar. These can include feelings of choking or difficulty breathing, which may be related to several lupus-connected issues.

Some possible lupus-related causes for throat discomfort include:

- Swollen lymph nodes in the neck (lymphadenopathy), which can create pressure and discomfort, especially during flares
- Anxiety related to living with lupus, which can cause a sensation of a lump in the throat
- Thyroid issues, as lupus may affect the thyroid and cause it to enlarge

It's good that your doctor has scheduled an upper GI test. This will help identify what's causing your symptoms. Since you've experienced this since your teenage years and it's worsening, getting a proper diagnosis is important.

If you're experiencing throat swelling or difficulty breathing along with the coughing, be sure to mention this to your doctor, as swollen lymph nodes are common in people with lupus and can affect the throat area.

MMM it might be a vocal cord thing...that they are not closing when they should. An ENT might be worth consulting.

Does this happen often, Linda? I infrequently have it happen when a little liquid gets into the trachea, as most people do. The swallowing assessment (UGI) sounds like a good idea, and you hope you get answers and relief soon. Please keep us posted.

Yes, this happens to me all the time.

I do this occasionally. And sometimes I have food that gets stuck. It’s not all the time though.
