Hi Sheila! I used to be a medical laboratory technician for close to 30 years before I had to quit. One thing I will tell you is if there is a concern for possible false positive results regarding any tests, those tests are usually reanalyzed or another sample is requested for retesting. If your Doctor simply dismissed you and claims they were all false positives without an explanation, then I would push him to retest you. Also, look up all the tests you mentioned above and research what could cause false positive results for each of those tests and let the doctor know that you've done your research and deserve to be retested because your pain is real and needs to be addressed.

How can you get help when doctors say your ANA titer, ESR, and/or CRP are false positives, especially when you're experiencing severe body pain and fatigue?

It's understandable to feel frustrated when test results don't seem to match how you're feeling. Here's what might help when you see your primary care doctor Friday:

Prepare for Your Appointment:
* Write down all your symptoms, including when they started and how they affect your daily life
* Note any patterns - do symptoms get worse at certain times?
* Bring a list of all medications and supplements you're taking
* Document your pain levels and energy changes

Important Points to Discuss:

ANA tests alone don't diagnose lupus - they're just one piece of the puzzle. Up to 15 percent of healthy people can test positive for ANAs, but that doesn't mean your symptoms aren't real or significant.

Ask your doctor about additional testing that looks beyond just ANA, ESR, and CRP. A complete blood count, complement levels (C3 and C4), and specific autoantibody tests (like anti-dsDNA, anti-Ro/SSA, anti-La/SSB) can provide more information.

Consider Asking For:
* A referral to a rheumatologist if you haven't seen one yet
* Additional autoantibody testing
* Urinalysis to check kidney function
* A complete metabolic panel

Test results need to be interpreted alongside your symptoms and medical history - not in isolation. If your symptoms suggest lupus but initial tests are unclear, you may need ongoing monitoring and repeat testing over time.
