Dealing with full-body itching on top of everything else lupus throws at you is really exhausting — you deserve some relief! Since hydrocortisone isn't cutting it, there are other options worth discussing with your doctor.
Here are some treatments that have helped other MyLupusTeam members:
- Over-the-counter antihistamines like cetirizine (Zyrtec) or Benadryl taken daily can help manage itching and hives
- Stronger topical prescription creams like triamcinolone or clobetasol propionate (used in two-week cycles) have worked well for some
- Oral steroids like prednisone for more severe flare-ups
- Omalizumab (Xolair) injections monthly — one MyLupusTeam member described it as "a miracle" for rashes and itching At home, some MyLupusTeam members have found relief using:
- Ice packs directly on itchy skin
- Witch hazel applied to affected areas
- Rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball followed by prescription cream
It's really important to go back to your doctor and explain that the hydrocortisone isn't working. There are clearly more options available, and you shouldn't have to just put up with this!
