If this is anything more than a fleeting twinge, Krystal, please get it checked out! Going to the ER is reasonable with chest pain.

Yes, this is something many people with lupus experience, and it's definitely worth taking seriously. Chest pain that radiates down the arm can have several lupus-related causes, but it can also be a warning sign of something more urgent.

Seek emergency care immediately if the chest pain is accompanied by any of these:
- Shortness of breath
- Dizziness or cold sweats
- Nausea
- A sense that something is very wrong
- Pain spreading to the jaw or neck

People with lupus have a significantly higher risk of heart attack compared to the general population, so any new or unusual chest pain should never be ignored. If it's not an emergency, there are several lupus-related causes that could explain this type of pain:

- Pericarditis – inflammation of the tissue surrounding the heart
- Pleuritis (pleurisy) – inflammation of the lining around the lungs
- Costochondritis – inflammation where the ribs meet the breastbone, which can cause sharp chest wall pain
- Intercostal neuralgia – nerve pain around the ribs and chest that can radiate and feel like bands wrapping around the body

A MyLupusTeam member described arm pain that felt like soreness radiating all the way down into the hand, sometimes lasting hours or even days.

It's really important to report any chest pain to a rheumatologist or primary care doctor so they can figure out the exact cause. Don't brush it off — with lupus, new symptoms always deserve a closer look.
