Yes, lupus can absolutely cause stomach and digestive issues. Between 40% and 60% of people with lupus will experience some type of digestive problem at some point. As one MyLupusTeam member put it, "I am sick to my stomach almost every day."

Digestive issues can stem from lupus itself, related conditions, or the medications used to treat lupus. Common symptoms include:

- Nausea and vomiting
- Bloating and gas
- Heartburn
- Stomach pain or cramps
- Diarrhea or constipation
- Loss of appetite
- Trouble swallowing Lupus can cause inflammation in the esophagus, intestines, pancreas, liver, and other parts of the abdomen, which leads to many of these symptoms.

Some common lupus medications can also contribute to stomach issues:

- NSAIDs (like ibuprofen or aspirin) can cause ulcers and stomach bleeding
- Corticosteroids (like prednisone) can cause ulcers and liver problems
- Azathioprine (Imuran) can affect the pancreas and liver
- Methotrexate can cause acid reflux and abdominal pain

It's worth tracking when symptoms appear and sharing that information with your rheumatologist, as it can help pinpoint whether lupus itself or a medication is the cause. If you ever notice dark or black stools, contact your healthcare provider right away.

I had various issues with my digestive system. Contact your health team first for further testing. Be well, warrior!

It has definitely caused me stomach problems. Sometimes I get nauseated and sick without any reason. My rheumatologist told me that a lot of people with Lupus struggle with this. I hope you feel better soon.

I wish I could be helpful with this question, but I've had digestive issues most of my life.I was born with Hirschsprung's disease(a birth defect in the lg colon) after special diet and surgery (5 1/2 hr colon resection) I managed it for years. Now with Lupus I have more frequent issues with it and IBS-C, GERD. that's just a few chronic issues, so I'm thinking YES Lupus not only causes digestive problems but aggravates pre-existing conditions. Have your PCP, Rheumatologist and Gastroenterologist all communicate IF POSSIBLE. I hope you can find some relief but remember to be your own advocate and take care of yourself. Prayers to all who suffer from autoimmune diseases.
