San Tan Valley, AZ

I have been struggling with kidney/bladder infections for the past 2 years. My rheumatologist suggested that I pause my Methotrexate for a bit to give my body a break. That was a terrible idea. I had joint pain and swelling almost immediately. Joint pain like I have never experienced before. The past few days my hands and feet have been itching like crazy. It's literally making me insane. Is this something anyone else has experienced?

Itching hands and feet is definitely something other people with lupus have experienced, so you're not alone in this! A MyLupusTeam member described a very similar situation β€” a bumpy, itchy rash that comes and goes on their hands and is almost constant on their feet.

This type of rash is sometimes linked to a condition called dyshidrotic eczema (also known as pompholyx), which can cause small blisters, itching, peeling, and burning on the hands and feet. It can be triggered by:

- Stress
- Extreme fatigue
- Sun exposure
- Contact allergies

Lupus and its treatments can make the skin more sensitive, so flares in skin symptoms alongside joint flares aren't uncommon. Given everything going on β€” pausing Methotrexate, the return of intense joint pain, and now the itching β€” it's really worth looping back in with your rheumatologist soon. The itching could be related to the medication pause, a lupus flare, or something else entirely that needs attention.

Hang in there β€” what you're going through sounds genuinely exhausting, and getting some answers will hopefully bring some relief soon. πŸ’™
