Discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) is the most common type of cutaneous (skin) lupus. It causes thick, scaly, coin-shaped lesions or rashes that typically appear on the face, scalp, or neck — though they can show up elsewhere on the body too.
The rashes can appear in different colors depending on skin tone:
- Red, dark purple, or dark brown
- Raised and scaly
- About the size of a coin
Around two-thirds of people with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) experience some form of cutaneous lupus symptoms. While discoid lupus isn't always painful or itchy, many people do experience those symptoms. As one MyLupusTeam member shared, "Burning all over. Itching all over my face, scalp, and ears. I have discoid lupus."
Some important things to be aware of with discoid lupus:
- It can cause scarring and skin discoloration
- Scalp involvement can lead to hair thinning or hair loss
- Long-lasting lesions can, in rare cases, develop into skin cancer, so regular monitoring is important
If you notice disc-shaped rashes, it's worth bringing them up with your doctor or dermatologist so they can help you manage symptoms and keep an eye on any changes.
