Every six months, dental exams are a must, especially for those of us with kidney disease and/or immunosuppression (any medication other than HCQ). Our chronic inflammation makes us more prone to dental/periodontal disease, which then impacts our overall health. @A MyLupusTeam Member shared some recent research showing that our kidney function deteriorates more rapidly in the presence of dental problems. Thanks, MrsV!

I do my best, twice a year but dental coverage gets pretty bad when you go on Medicare.

What a great reminder! Regular dental care is genuinely important for people with lupus, and the connection to overall health is very real.

What a great reminder! Regular dental care is genuinely important for people with lupus, and the connection to overall health is very real.

Research shows that people with lupus are significantly more prone to:

- Tooth decay — studies suggest up to 87% of people with lupus experience cavities
- Gum (periodontal) disease — inflammation and immune dysfunction make gums more vulnerable
- Mouth sores — affecting around 40% of people with lupus
- Dry mouth — which further accelerates tooth decay If you're on immunosuppressive medications, your infection risk after dental work is higher, so always loop in your rheumatologist before any procedure. Some medications may need to be temporarily adjusted beforehand — never stop them without guidance though.

Also, don't forget to mention photosensitivity to your dentist — sunglasses under that bright dental lamp are completely acceptable! 😎

As a MyLupusTeam member once shared, *"Check with your rheumatologist, and see if it makes any difference. It all depends on what you're on."* Wise words!

I strongly suggest getting dental insurance. It won't cover everything, but it will definitely make a difference. I got dental insurance and it has saved me thousands of dollars in the past year.

Also for anyone with Sjogren's disease it is critical to go frequently I was just at the dentist 2 months ago X-rays were taken I went in today with a loose cap they x-rayed and what bottom teeth I have on the right side of my mouth are all infected underneath the skin and headed to the Bone. Antibiotics will be started ASAP and then they will have to surgically remove what teeth are left there as they were all caps. Sjogren's disease due to the lack of saliva in your mouth causes a buildup of bacteria among other things and Decay is imminent no matter how many times you brush your teeth use mouthwash Etc. Eventually it gets you as it's now getting me.

Physicians Mutual only covers preventive care for the first year. After the first year, they cover 70% for the doctors in the plan and 40% for doctors not in the plan. I have had so much dental work lately, I am so grateful I have it. I think I have Sjogren's, and that is what is causing some of the problems.
