I can't take NSAIDS, they will cause a stomach bleed and kill me. I can't do steroids, I have a negative response to them, almost like an allergic reaction. I am taking Plaqueni, but I can't tell a difference. I am in the middle of a flare, with horrible symptoms, such as being burned alive when I get hot. I am having throat problems, I break out in a rash everyday, and I am so exhausted my body is trying to stay in bed all the time. If I can't take the normal medication, how can I get my flare… read more

That sounds absolutely exhausting and overwhelming β€” dealing with a flare when your medication options are so limited is genuinely tough, and those symptoms sound really intense right now.

The most important step is to contact your rheumatologist as soon as possible, even urgently. Throat problems during a flare can sometimes signal organ involvement, which needs prompt medical attention. Since NSAIDs and steroids are off the table, there are other treatment paths worth discussing with your doctor. These include:

- Immunosuppressants β€” such as azathioprine, methotrexate, mycophenolate mofetil, or cyclosporine, which help calm the immune system
- Biologic drugs β€” these target specific parts of the immune system to reduce inflammation and can be especially helpful when other medications haven't worked
- Topical steroids β€” if your rash is the main concern, a cream or ointment applied directly to the skin may cause fewer systemic reactions than oral steroids

Hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil) can take several months before noticeable improvement, so it may still be working in the background even if it doesn't feel that way yet. While waiting to speak with your doctor, some supportive measures may help ease symptoms:

- Rest as much as possible β€” your body is telling you something
- Avoid known triggers β€” heat sensitivity is very common during flares, so staying cool is especially important
- Manage stress β€” easier said than done, but even small reductions help
- Eat a balanced diet β€” it won't cure a flare, but it supports overall health Please don't wait on the throat symptoms β€” reach out to your care team today. You deserve a treatment plan that actually works for your specific situation, and there are more options available than it may feel like right now.
