What you're going through sounds absolutely exhausting — and getting that disability determination after such a long fight, while managing so many serious conditions at once, takes real strength. You don't need to justify that decision to anyone.

The dismissal from people close to you is unfortunately something many MyLupusTeam members experience. Living with lupus and its related conditions is deeply misunderstood, especially when symptoms are invisible or constantly shifting. A few things that may help when dealing with people who dismiss your reality:

- Keep it simple — you don't owe anyone a detailed medical explanation
- Set boundaries — it's okay to say "I'm not up for debating my health today"
- Lean on those who get it — connecting with others who truly understand lupus can ease the loneliness that comes with being dismissed
- Consider speaking with a therapist — many MyLupusTeam members have found this genuinely helpful

Your disability status reflects a real, documented medical reality. Managing SLE alongside so many comorbidities without ever reaching remission is incredibly demanding. Your decision to prioritize your health is valid — full stop.

I'm glad you got disability! I totally feel where you are coming from. My last year of work had me concerned my state agency would try to make up a reason to let me go (at will state), being I had suffered several flares brought on by environmental issues (black mold at my worksite or coworkers spraying fragranced sprays around the building to cover the dank smell in the building, which caused asthma attacks, and subsequent lupus flares). I took early retirement to maintain my pension. If the state had pushed me out on made up issues, I stood to lose my pension. I had no opinion, noting how I had seen them treat other people with disabilities. At will states are notorious for letting people go without noted cause, so I would have to prove it was my disability they were targeting by letting me go in a court of law. The same agency actually asked me to come back after I retired, but after what I had been through there, and the fact black mold was still an issue, I could not risk my health further. With how I'm flaring right now, a part time job really isn't even an option now, but I don't want to discount possibilities in the future, if my condition becomes more manageable.
