My feet and legs are swollen to the point I can barely walk. The pain is unbearable. I've elevated them above the heart, walked with a walker some to keep the blood flowing, soaked them. My husband rubbed feet and rubbed legs towards heart so blood would flow better. It hurt but felt good, if that makes sense. I'm so over this. Any ideas?

Are swollen ankles and painful feet something you're experiencing with lupus? This is actually really common β studies show that up to 77% of people with lupus deal with foot pain at some point, and it can seriously affect daily life.
There are a few reasons this might be happening:
- Lupus arthritis β About 95% of people with lupus experience joint pain or arthritis, which often affects the feet and ankles
- Inflammation from lupus β Lupus-related inflammation can cause swelling, pain, and stiffness
- Lupus nephritis β Kidney involvement can cause fluid retention and swelling in the legs and ankles (affects about 50% of people with lupus)
- Medication side effects β Corticosteroids like prednisone and NSAIDs can cause fluid retention and swelling Some things that may help manage swelling include:
- Elevating your feet above heart level for 20β30 minutes at a time
- Compression stockings to improve circulation (check with your doctor first)
- Regular gentle exercise to boost circulation
- Reducing sodium intake to help with fluid retention
- Prescribed diuretics if recommended by your doctor
One MyLupusTeam member shared that propping legs up higher than the chest and placing cold, wet towels over the feet helped bring some relief.
It's important to contact your doctor promptly if the swelling is sudden, only in one leg, painful, or comes with shortness of breath or chest pain β these need immediate attention.
