I had a flu vaccine on Saturday and I have been in the worse lupus flare. They recommended a hepatitis b also but now I am afraid of that one.

Members shared mixed experiences in response to the question about whether lupus can trigger a flare after the flu vaccine, with many describing significant reactions including flares, illness, and prolonged symptoms after various vaccines. Several members offered practical advice, including spacing out vaccines by a few weeks, getting only one at a time, and choosing a pharmacy over a clinic for a more comfortable injection experience. A recurring theme was the importance of knowing your own body, with some members tolerating vaccines well while others chose to stop getting them altogether after repeated bad reactions.

That sounds really rough β€” feeling worse after trying to protect yourself is so frustrating. It's a valid concern, and you're not alone in experiencing this.

Lupus doesn't exactly "attack" the flu vaccine, but the immune system's response to any vaccine can sometimes trigger a flare. This is because vaccines work by activating your immune system, and in lupus, that immune system is already unpredictable.

A few things worth knowing:
- Immunosuppressive medications (like prednisone, methotrexate, or mycophenolate) can affect how your body responds to vaccines
- Timing matters β€” getting vaccinated during a period of active disease or a flare can increase the chance of a reaction
- Inactivated vaccines (like the flu shot) are generally considered safer for people with lupus than live vaccines Regarding the hepatitis B vaccine β€” it's completely understandable to feel hesitant right now. The most important step is to talk with your rheumatologist before getting it. They can help with:

- Timing it around a more stable period in your lupus
- Reviewing your current medications and how they might affect your response
- Deciding whether any temporary medication adjustments make sense

Please don't make any decisions about future vaccines without looping in your care team first, especially given what you're experiencing right now. Feel better soon! πŸ’™

Yes, unfortunately, it's not pretty. I don't get it no more. It gives me all the symptoms of Covid, in the worse way.

That said, I don't get any of those vaccines.

Lupus is a "CopyCat" disease, its confused with reality.... Lupus is very very sneaky and tricky...be aware, cautious, and safe!

I hope U FEEL Better soon!

I have re-upped all my vaccines just because RSV almost killed me before the vaccine came out. I get them one at a time. The Hepatitis vaccines set off alarms at MUSC. Their labs showed I was likely exposed, and clearly no one looked to see how recent my vaccines were. πŸ€¦πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ Sometimes, you really wonder about doctors. I've had to tell them multiple times that the vaccines actually set the labs off!

So sad, the Life of a Lupus Patient. But, not so sad when we stay woke, know our bodies, and stay away from vaccines we've had to learn in the worse way, that doesn't work for U/Us.

We got this, we're STRONGER and More Educated, 2gether!!!

Have a Safe, Healthy & Happy Wknd! 🌸

I refuse to get any more vaccines. We especially can’t take the live ones because we seem to take them on immediately. At least, I do. I had to take the whooping cough vaccine at school due to a student and mom having it. I ended up very sick within 30 mins. I had the whooping cough for 200 days.
