First off, a sticky tongue mid-conversation is truly one of lupus's less glamorous gifts — you're definitely not alone in this!
Pilocarpine (Salagen) is a prescription medication that works by stimulating saliva production. Results can vary from person to person, but many people begin noticing some improvement within a few weeks of consistent use. It's worth having a follow-up chat with your doctor if you're not seeing results, as dosage adjustments are sometimes needed. While waiting for the medication to kick in, here are some things that may help in the meantime:
- Sip water frequently throughout the day
- Suck on sugar-free candy or ice cubes to encourage saliva
- Try over-the-counter dry mouth sprays, gels, or mouthwash
- Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and salty or spicy foods, which can worsen dryness
- Use a humidifier, especially at night
Also, let your dentist know about the dry mouth, as it can increase the risk of tooth decay over time.

I’ve been taking it for a couple of years. I am unable to take it in the summer due to the hot flashes it gives me, however when I can take it, it certainly helps with the tongue stuck on roof of my mouth. I also was getting painful stones in my salivary glands which it really helped with. A tip, I take it a 5am when I first wake up. I pop one in and go back to sleep, but have to put a towel on my pillow because it makes me drool like crazy. Good luck!
