What can you do when you're so sore getting up and out of bed with lupus?
Morning soreness is something many people with lupus know all too well. The good news is there are some gentle strategies that can help ease that transition from bed to standing. Here are some tips to try:
- Move slowly β Don't rush. Start by gently wiggling your fingers, toes, and ankles before even attempting to sit up.
- Stretch in bed first β Gentle stretching while still lying down can help loosen stiff muscles and joints before you put weight on them.
- Roll to your side β Instead of sitting straight up, roll to one side and use your arms to push yourself up. This puts less strain on sore muscles.
- Warm up your body β A warm shower or heating pad on sore areas can help relax muscles and improve circulation.
- Give yourself time β Rushing makes it worse. Build extra time into your morning so you're not stressed on top of being sore.
One MyLupusTeam member shared that when dealing with arm weakness and soreness, they would "just work it out slowly by moving it a little at a time."
If morning soreness is becoming unmanageable or getting worse, it's worth mentioning to your doctor. It could be a sign of a flare that may need attention.
