Feeling deeply cold and struggling to warm up is something many people with lupus experience. One MyLupusTeam member shared, "Mornings are the worst. It can take up to three hours for me to get somewhat warm." There are a few lupus-related reasons this can happen. Here are some possible causes to be aware of:
- Raynaud's phenomenon — A condition linked to lupus where blood vessels constrict in response to cold or stress, reducing blood flow and causing coldness, numbness, or discoloration, usually in the fingers or toes
- Anemia — Lupus can attack red blood cells, making it harder for blood to carry oxygen around the body, which can leave you feeling cold
- Hypothyroidism — An underactive thyroid is more common in people with lupus and can slow metabolism, causing chills and sluggishness
- Hypothermia — Rarely, certain medications (including high-dose corticosteroids) or lupus affecting the hypothalamus (the brain's temperature regulator) can make it hard to stay warm It's worth tracking when these cold sensations happen and sharing any patterns with a doctor. If the coldness comes on suddenly on one side of the body and is paired with confusion, dizziness, or difficulty speaking, seek emergency care right away as these can be signs of something more serious.
In the meantime, dressing in warm layers and avoiding sudden temperature changes can help manage day-to-day coldness.

I always shock my husband when he kisses me in the morning! He says my nose and hands are freezing. I have Hypothyroidism but take medicine for that. As with Maria, I too take a couple of hours to warm up. A nice hot shower usually does the trick too.
