Hi. My name is Phuong from Vietnam. I am 32 years old. I was first diagnosed with Lupus at age of 27 with symptom of fever, joint pain, hair loss, red cheeks, shortness of breath and glomerulonephritis
After 2 year treatment, my hair, my joint, my kidneys... are okay but my eyes was becoming worse day by day. My distance vision is okay but my near vision is blurred. The doctor said that my peripheral vision are becoming smaller and smaller. One day, I will become blind. The doctor have not… read more

@A MyLupusTeam Member: I also think so at the beginning. I have stopped taking Plaquenil since Feb 2015 but my eye's condition haven't improved and keep getting worse. The doctor said that the reason of my eye's problem is maybe from drug, maybe from my immune system. She said that she has never seen any patient like me before. Even no lab in Vietnam and Singapore can do the blood test she request (blood test about immune). They must send to the US for testing and I will have the result after 2 month ( next March).

If you are taking Plaquenil ... that can have a bad effect on your eyes.

I was having right eye peripheral double vision. A biopsy was done on the right temporal artery and diagnosed with Giant Cell Arteritis. I was on high doses of steroids (ugh!) but did not lose my right eye vision. There still is some peripheral double vision in the right eye but doesn't interfere with my vision.
Now I'm dealing with double vision due to left eye droop. Many tests were done to rule out other illnesses, but the neurologist (have great respect for him) diagnosed me with cranial nerve damage that caused the left eyelid droop and double vision as the eyes were not symetrical. The plan is to have surgery to lift the eyelid and try prizm glasses.
My rheumatologist concurred but agreed it's rare symptom of lupus. But, as usual, we lupies don't fit the mold!
I pray you find an answer especially as so many years have passed since you wrote. God Bless, Susan

This is my case:
Neuro-ophthalmic Involvement (nerve damage)

Cranial nerve palsies can result in double vision, poor eye movement and alignment, poor pupil reflexes, and droopy eyelids.
Lupus optic neuropathy occurs in one-two percent of people with lupus.2 Slow progressive vision loss also can result in more rapid loss of vision from lupus optic neuropathy.6
Damage to the visual nerve fibers in the brain may cause hallucination and loss of peripheral vision and/or central vision.
