I have yet to receive an diagnosis and have been sick for 2 years. My tongue recently swelled and became extremely inflamed and sensitive. Has anyone else experience this? If so, have you been told what the cause was? An allergic reaction or reaction to the disease?

Yes, I have had this ... I think it's probably part of the inflammatory response.. I use Orajel on the inflamed tongue buds when this happens ...

I am new to the site, guided here because of my recent scare over a swollen tongue. It happens to me quite often unfortunately. Sometimes it's worse than others. It ranges from being inflamed and sensitive (a burning, stinging sensation and puffy) to being outright huge and not fitting inside my mouth! The last incident was so extreme it brought me to urgent care for a steroid shot.

I was sent for allergy testing asap to find the cause. I've been highly allergic all my life, hives, swelling, extraordinary amounts of mucous, always a stuffed nose etc, but sadly, surprisingly...my allergy tests today showed NOTHING! Nothing! I had only a slight reaction to cats (which I already knew I was allergic too) And that certainly didn't explain my swollen tongue! Once again the possibility of Hypothyroidism (Hashi's) & Lupus came up 😔
The allergist knew nothing about my history and had no idea several doctors over the years have suspected Lupus. I'm getting concerned since its seems every mysterious, seemingly unrelated symptom of mine winds up pointing in the same direction.

The brief explanation I was given was that both Hashimotos (hypothyroid) and Lupus are autoimmune problems, both of which cause reactions & inflammation and this likely the cause of my swelling. It sure looked and felt like an "allergic reaction" but it wasn't caused by an allergen. An outside allergen anyway. It's starting to look like I'm allergic to myself

Not sure any of this helps you but perhaps knowing someone else is having the same issue & a dr has confirmed it can relate back to lupus sheds some light

Sorry you're having swelling in your tongue. I would recommend a visit to your rheumatologist. This could be an allergic reaction and I wouldn't 2nd guess it.

Thanks! Just left the Rheumatologist and she mentioned an allergic reaction. Explained I had this happen when I was a kid, but hasn’t happen since I was 8 or 9 years old. I hold SOMEONE gives me answers soon!
