I have wanted a tattoo for some time now, I was diagnosed with discoid lupus in Jan. 2023. I have wanted a memorial piece for both my parents. Would you give opinions on whether I should go for it? I have asked my dermatologist and they said no, but again, I would like other's opinions.

Is it safe to get a tattoo with lupus? Here are some key points to consider:

- Consult Your Doctor: Always check with your doctor before getting a tattoo, especially if you're in an active flare or on high-dose medications.
- Medication Considerations: Avoid tattoos if you're on acne medications, antibiotics, immunosuppressive drugs, or long-term steroids.
- Healing and Aftercare: Lupus may slow down the healing process. Keep the tattoo clean and moisturized, avoid swimming and sun exposure, and don't pick at scabs.
- Infection Risks: Infections can be dangerous for those with lupus. Choose a reputable, clean tattoo shop and ensure the artist uses sterilized equipment.
- Skin Reactions: Some people with lupus report swelling, itching, or irritation, especially with colored inks. Starting with black ink might be safer.
- Temporary Alternatives: Consider temporary tattoos or henna as a safer option.

Always prioritize your health and consult with your healthcare provider to make an informed decision.

If you do black and gray are best. Color takes longer to heal and could get infected

I’d be worried about infection. So yeah research to find the best.💜

I had 3 tattoos done within about six months. After the third tattoo, my Rheumatologist told me very politely that I should not get any more. I did, however, have trouble with a skin problem on and around the third tattoo, which was the only colored tattoo I have. The others are black. The colored tattoo is absolutely beautiful now and I get many compliments on it.
