This type of behavior from family members is a form of gaslighting and emotional manipulation, which can be considered abusive. Using your lupus diagnosis and medications to discredit you or dismiss your legitimate concerns is not acceptable behavior. This kind of manipulation can make you question yourself and impact your emotional wellbeing.

Many people with lupus face similar challenges when family members don't fully understand or choose to misrepresent their condition. It's important to remember that being on medication for lupus doesn't make your experiences, observations, or feelings any less valid. Consider being direct with trusted family members about how this behavior affects you. Some MyLupusTeam members have found success in educating their families about lupus and its treatments to build better understanding and support. If the manipulative behavior continues, you may want to consult with a counselor or social worker who can help you establish boundaries and address potential elder abuse concerns.

This is so difficult to deal with. If it is causing you stress, consider therapy. There’s no judgement, it’s cathartic and whatever you say will not be repeated. You really don’t need to leave your house for the therapy if you prefer the comfort of your own dwelling.

I believe most of us, who deal with an autoimmune disease, have heard the full gamut of responses. The one thing that fries my bacon is the statement, “well you don’t look sick.” Lately I just say, well thanks, but I suddenly feel quite nauseous. Gotta go now🤪

Hi Machel
People can be very cruel when you suffer a chronic illness.
Some will use it to cover up their own insecurities others are just nasty.
I have been fortunate to have a family that cares.
But in saying that they don’t really want to hear my struggles. So people like us can feel very isolated. I tend to look the other way if I come across mean people and if around good people I don’t mention what I have until I am asked.
So I don’t put a lot into conversations I just listen to everyone else.
I have had confrontations over different things outside my family but have learned to walk away with confidence.
Took years for me to reach this and it was only after seeking psychological help. Of which I attend once a month for maintenance.
Just look after your needs and do what’s best for you as to not make this horrid condition worse.
Good luck.🥰💜💜💜💜

@A MyLupusTeam Member, I am sorry to hear that you are going through this... The average person really doesn't have the knowledge and or the ability to understand the complexity of having lupus... That being said there is no excuse for anyone to make you feel emotional pain... I am sorry that this is happening to you. 🤗💜
