What we do know is that people with lupus are more likely to experience dental problems, including:
- Nearly 100% prevalence of tooth decay with active lupus
- Increased risk of dry mouth which can compromise tooth health
- Higher rates of periodontal (gum) disease
- Frequent mouth sores and ulcers If you have concerns about your dental fillings, it's important to discuss them with both your rheumatologist and dentist. They can work together to determine the best treatment options for your specific situation while taking into account your lupus condition and potential risks like:
- Increased infection risk
- Higher inflammation risk
- Possible neuropathy complications
- Photosensitivity during dental procedures
