When lupus affects the spine, it can cause inflammation and swelling that leads to joint and nerve problems. This inflammation, combined with degenerative disc disease, can make it difficult to walk and cause severe stiffness. The discs between vertebrae act as cushions, and when they wear down, it can cause the bones to rub together, leading to pain and mobility issues. To help determine the source of your pain and stiffness, you may need:
- Blood tests
- X-rays
- MRI imaging

Treatment options could include:
- Corticosteroids to reduce inflammation
- NSAIDs for pain management
- Physical therapy to improve strength and mobility
- Immunosuppressive medications

Given the complexity of your symptoms, it would be beneficial to see a rheumatologist who specializes in lupus if you haven't already, as they can better coordinate your care and treatment plan.
