@BrendaMcneal2--There is a genetic predisposition to lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and other autoimmune diseases, Brenda. Then, some environmental trigger, which is believed to be a virus or other infection, activates our immune system and antibodies against the body are produced. Pesticides and other environmental pollutants may play a role in triggering these diseases, too.
Sjogrens not only attacks our eyes and mouth, but our whole body can be involved -it's a disease with multi-system involvement, dry skin, arthritis/joint pain, gastrointestinal problems, headaches, neurological deficits and more. Breastfeeding with Raynauds and Sjogrens was extremely difficult
I think the best advice I can give is be extremely meticulous with dental care. I lost 4 or 5 teeth before it was controlled.
Sorry I am late getting on here. For eye drops, my eye doctor recommended Refresh Optive as it is a lubricated drop and should give longer lasting relief. At night I use XyliMelts (stick-on-melts). One side of this sticks to the gum and dissolves over a period of time. I am able to go to sleep without being afraid of choking on it. I order this from Amazon. All you can do with Sjogren's is control it. I've not heard of anything that changes it. Wear sunglasses when you go outside. I had quite a bit of problem when our air here in KC was full of smoke from Canada. Wind is not our friend either even that produced by our fans.
