I had to journal my food intake to see which foods irritate me the most, as well as adding a fiber supplement

Gastrointestinal issues and gas are common concerns for people with lupus, especially those taking medications like Plaquenil (hydroxychloroquine) and other lupus treatments. These symptoms can be related to both the condition itself and the medications used to treat it.

Here are some potential causes:
• Lupus affecting the digestive system directly
• Side effects from medications like Plaquenil, NSAIDs, or steroids
• Different formulations of medications (generic vs. brand name) There are several ways to manage these symptoms:

• Talk to your doctor about trying different formulations of your medications
• Consider over-the-counter gas relief medications (after checking with your doctor about interactions)
• Make dietary adjustments under medical supervision
• Track when symptoms occur and what medications you're taking

Remember to discuss any persistent digestive issues with your healthcare provider, as they may want to adjust your treatment plan or recommend specific management strategies.

Food intolerance, especially dairy, is a possibility, Krystal. Irritable bowel and SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) are a few other possibilities to discuss with your doctor, too. We're more prone to celiac disease (also autoimmune), but that usually causes diarrhea. Have you seen a GI specialist if your internal medicine doctor and rheumatologist are unsure of the cause? Lupus can be a contributor, but these other issues should be considered, too.

My doctor told me to use Miralax daily for my bowel issues. It helps. @A MyLupusTeam Member ginger tea will help ease the gassiness. I prefer lemon ginger tea.
