I have SLE and I thought it was just allergies/sinus issues but it is way too often I am wondering if it could be flare related. I also have skin outbreaks at that time (which are part of my flares).

Can lupus flares cause respiratory symptoms like cough, sinus drainage, and post nasal drip?

Yes, lupus can affect your respiratory system and cause these symptoms. Inflammation from lupus can impact your lungs, the lining around them, and your diaphragm, leading to breathing issues and cough. About 50 percent of people with lupus experience lung-related complications.

Sinus problems are also common with lupus. Many MyLupusTeam members report dealing with constant sinus drainage, postnasal drip, and related symptoms. One member shared: "My sister, who has lupus, has constant sinus drainage, and it gives her a sore throat and makes her chest hurt."

The connection happens a few ways:

- Lupus inflammation can directly affect your upper respiratory system and sinuses
- Some studies show sinus blockage may be related to disease activity levels
- About 31.5 percent of people with SLE experience nasal congestion

People with lupus are also more prone to sinus infections because lupus and immunosuppressant medications can weaken the immune system, making bacterial infections more likely.

If you're experiencing these symptoms during a flare, it's important to talk with your rheumatologist to determine whether they're from lupus inflammation or an infection, as treatment approaches differ.

Yes. I have a persistent dry cough. I didn’t realize it was lupus related until researching symptoms more.

Aloe is so good for us internally. I use it for tender gums and soothing stomach. It helps w constipation too. I always keep it on hand. I get the liquid from Walmart.

I'm glad you posted your question. I too was diagnosed with SLE and since mid October have been experiencing not only a burning tongue and mouth, but the burning is moving down my throat. My throat feels irritated. Not really sore, but irritated enough that you notice. I also get the occasional sinus drainage and feel like my ears are full. The doctor said my throat looks red, but said there is nothing to really do about it. Anyone ever tried Aloe?

Thank you for replying. It makes more sense than my excuse for the past few years. Thank you again!
