What helps manage lupus flare-ups, especially those related to your menstrual cycle?

It sounds like you're dealing with a tough flare right before your period. You're definitely not alone—many MyLupusTeam members report experiencing flares around their menstrual cycle due to hormonal changes. One member said, "I flare every month with my cycle!"

You're already doing the right things by taking prednisone and resting. Here are other strategies members find helpful during flares:

Rest and Recovery:
- Get plenty of quality sleep and give your body breaks throughout the day
- Stay in bed when needed—one member learned the hard way after being bedridden for a week from pushing too hard

Managing Pain and Swelling:
- Apply ice or cold compresses to swollen joints
- Keep affected areas elevated when possible
- Avoid physical stressors that could worsen symptoms

Stress Management:
- Find ways to reduce current stressors in your environment
- Practice relaxation techniques like deep breathing
- Avoid anxiety about the flare itself, which can create a negative cycle

Stay Hydrated:
- Sip cold water, which some members find soothing
- One member shared: "I chew crushed ice, and it seems to cool me off"

If your flare doesn't improve or you have repeated flares around your cycle, talk with your rheumatologist. They might adjust your medication or help you develop strategies specifically for hormone-related flares.
