Maureen, this used to be called Wegener's granulomatosis, and it's a very rare form of autoimmune vasculitis (blood vessel inflammation) that primarily affects the lungs/respiratory tract and kidneys. Unfortunately, it can affect other organs, too, and it tends to be aggressive. There are effective treatments, and I hope your cousin recovers well! It is more common in people of Northern descent.
Please keep us posted.

What is PR-3 ANCA and how does it relate to lupus and other autoimmune conditions?
PR-3 ANCA is related to a different autoimmune condition than lupus, so it's outside the scope of what would be most helpful for managing your lupus specifically. However, it's worth noting that autoimmune conditions can run in families and sometimes occur together.
Your family history shows a pattern of multiple autoimmune conditions including lupus, Sjögren's, and celiac disease. Many people with lupus do have overlapping autoimmune conditions. Research shows that having one autoimmune disease can increase the risk of developing others, and there can be genetic factors involved.
If you're concerned about how your family's autoimmune history might affect your lupus management, it's important to discuss this with your rheumatology team. They can help you understand:
- Whether you need additional monitoring for other autoimmune conditions
- How family history might influence your lupus treatment plan
- What symptoms to watch for that might indicate overlapping conditions
Your doctor can also provide guidance on whether genetic or ancestry factors play a role in your specific situation.
