I was diagnosed in 2009. Since the beginning I've had problems with my teeth. At the present moment I have no teeth on the bottom and I need the upper pulled. It hurts just to have them cleaned or any other work done. I can't afford to get proper denture. So I purchased some just to wear out but I can't keep them in long because of dry mouth and they make me feel so nauseous. I really love my smile but really anymore because of my mouth. Is there a dentist that can help? I doubt it without them… read more

How can you find affordable dental care and manage denture discomfort with lupus-related dry mouth?

Dental problems are very common with lupus, and many members have experienced similar challenges with tooth decay and extractions. The dry mouth you're experiencing is a known lupus complication that can make wearing dentures extremely uncomfortable.

For finding affordable dental care, consider these options:

* Dental schools often provide services at reduced costs with supervised students
* Community health centers may offer sliding scale fees based on income
* Some nonprofit organizations provide dental assistance programs
* Ask your rheumatologist if they know of resources for lupus patients needing dental work

When you speak with potential dentists, let them know about your lupus diagnosis and sensitivity to dental work. They can take special precautions to minimize discomfort during procedures. For managing dry mouth with dentures, several strategies can help:

* Use over-the-counter artificial saliva products (sprays, gels, or mouthwashes designed for dry mouth)
* Keep your mouth moist with frequent sips of water throughout the day
* Try sugar-free candy or ice cubes to promote saliva production
* Use a humidifier, especially at night
* Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and carbonated drinks which worsen dry mouth

A MyLupusTeam member shared: "I use a product for dry mouth. They have a spray, toothpaste, and mouthwash; that might help."

If home remedies aren't helping, talk to your rheumatologist about prescription medications like pilocarpine that can increase saliva production. Your doctor needs to know about these symptoms to help find solutions.
