Can lupus affect your nails?

Yes, lupus can definitely affect your nails in several ways. Many people with lupus experience various nail changes that can be concerning or uncomfortable.

Common nail problems include:
* Horizontal ridges or dents in the nails
* Splitting or brittleness
* Nails separating from the nail bed
* Discoloration (purple, brown, gray, or white)
* Nails falling off completely
* Swelling and redness around the nails

A MyLupusTeam member shared: "For a couple of years after I was diagnosed with lupus, my fingernails did all kinds of weird things ... ridges, wavy nails, and purple moons."

These changes happen because of inflammation and how your immune system reacts. Lupus lesions at the base of the nail where it grows can cause many of these issues. Additionally, some lupus medications like hydroxychloroquine, methotrexate, and corticosteroids can contribute to nail changes as side effects.

The good news is that once your lupus is better controlled with treatment, nail problems often improve or disappear.
