What does an interstitial process in the lung mean?

An interstitial process refers to inflammation or damage in the interstitium โ€” the tissue around the air sacs in your lungs. When this tissue becomes inflamed or scarred, it can make it harder for your lungs to expand fully, which means less oxygen reaches your body.

In lupus, this can develop into what's called chronic diffuse interstitial lung disease (ILD). This happens when long-term inflammation causes scarring that spreads throughout the lungs.

Common symptoms include:
- Chest pain
- Trouble breathing, especially during exercise
- A persistent dry cough
- Fatigue

A MyLupusTeam member shared: "I have ILD. I do see a pulmonary doctor since my first time in the hospital because my breathing was bad to the point it affected my heart."

What you should do:

It's important to report any breathing problems or chest symptoms to your doctor right away. Catching lung conditions early gives you the best chance at successful treatment. Your doctor may refer you to a pulmonologist (lung specialist) for more testing.

Treatment often includes immunosuppressant medicines or anti-inflammatory medications to help reduce lung inflammation and prevent further scarring.

Kathalina, this may be due to pneumonia or scar tissue, among other possibilities. Please discuss it with your doctor.
