Came to the hospital thinking I was experiencing bad SLE and Fibromyalgia symptoms but a CT scan confirmed the above thus my admission

Yes, it is scary. Lupus can cause inflammation in any of our organs. I have had both pleurisy and pericarditis multiple times. With proper treatment, monitoring your heart and lungs, and lots of rest, hopefully, the inflammation and fluid will subside for you. Please keep us updated.

I developed bad asthma and bronchiectasis as a result of my condition. I get out of breath easily and now require CTs yearly, because I'm at risk for cancer. I see a pulmonologist next month to start working to keep my lungs clear. Serveral local reseachers have contacted me about studies. Asthma has always preceded my flares in the past. Hopefully, I will learn to keep more flares from happening.

First, it's completely understandable to feel scared right now — but being in the hospital is exactly the right place to be. Getting answers through that CT scan was an important step, and the medical team can now treat what's actually going on.

What you're experiencing sounds like it could involve two lupus-related conditions:

- Pericarditis — inflammation of the membrane surrounding the heart, which affects about 25% of people with lupus and often coincides with a flare
- Pleural effusion — a buildup of fluid around the lungs, which is also a known lupus complication These conditions are serious, which is why hospital admission is warranted — but they are recognized lupus complications that doctors know how to treat. One MyLupusTeam member shared a very similar experience, describing trouble breathing that led to a cardiac MRI confirming inflammation around the heart lining.

While these complications can feel overwhelming, catching them early — as has happened in your case — gives the best chance at successful treatment.

The most important thing right now is to:

- Communicate openly with your care team about all your symptoms
- Rest and let the medical team do their work
- Ask questions — understanding what's happening can help ease fear

You're in the right hands. 💙
