I was on it for 2 1/2 months and feeling worse than ever during that time with horrible joint pain, insomnia, muscle pain and fatigue. I quit 3 days ago and am already feeling better. Maybe it is just me, but I don't think this is the right drug for my body. I know it has helped so many. Please don't reply by telling me I need to be on it for 4-6 months because it has been intolerable and I can't do it anymore. Thanks!

Several MyLupusTeam members have reported similar experiences. One member shared that stopping hydroxychloroquine without gradually weaning off caused nausea, diarrhea, body pain, and an increase in flares. Another noted that missing doses led to stomach relief but then chest pain followed. The side effects experienced — joint pain, insomnia, muscle pain, and fatigue — are recognized side effects of hydroxychloroquine. Insomnia in particular is a lesser-known but documented side effect, along with:

- Vivid dreams or nightmares
- Night sweats
- Rapid heartbeat
- Fatigue and muscle weakness

These are considered serious enough to warrant a conversation with a doctor. Since hydroxychloroquine can stay in the system for up to three months, some side effects may linger even after stopping. It's really important to let a rheumatologist know what happened so they can explore other treatment options that may be a better fit. There are other lupus management approaches worth discussing with them.
