Trying to lose weight while dealing with low energy and more frequent bad days sounds really tough — and it's completely understandable given what lupus can throw at you. The good news is there are some gentle, manageable steps that can help with both energy and weight.
Here are some tips to consider:
- Eat well — Focus on lean proteins, unsaturated fats, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. These provide sustained energy throughout the day rather than quick spikes and crashes.
- Move gently — Light activity like walking, stretching, or yoga can gradually boost energy levels without overdoing it.
- Prioritize sleep — Going to bed and waking at the same time each day helps your body find a rhythm, which can improve energy.
- Manage stress — Mindfulness or breathing exercises can reduce both emotional and physical fatigue.
- Plan your day around your energy — Schedule more demanding tasks for when you feel your best, and build in rest breaks. It's also worth checking in with your doctor or rheumatologist about the increased bad days. Sometimes lupus medications themselves can contribute to fatigue and low energy, and adjusting the timing or dosage of certain medications — with your doctor's guidance — can make a real difference.
Be open and honest with your doctor about how your quality of life is being affected. You deserve support in managing this! 💙

I have a tendency to really put on weight when I go through stressful periods and I just went through a very stressful 18 months and gained 15-20 pounds. So frustrating. I'm focusing on cutting out oils/fats to a large extent and making 50% of every meal fruit or non-starchy vegetables. I lost 5 pounds in the first month of doing that. It takes a little mental energy but no extra physical energy and it helps you get a lot of beneficial fruits and vegetables which may help you feel better as well.
