On this particular night, I experienced severe chest pain and other symptoms that frightened me enough to drive myself to the ER. I noticed a mark on my thumb a few hours prior to the chest pain. Of course I thought it was makeup but I tried to wash it off and it didn't come off. I even tried removing it with acetone thinking maybe I used marker or lip stain (and didn't remember doing so) and it still remained. 24-hrs later it was gone. There was no change in texture nor pain/burning/itchiness… read more

What a frightening experience — and good on you for trusting your instincts and going to the ER. That kind of bruise-like mark that resists even acetone and then vanishes within 24 hours is definitely unusual and worth taking seriously.

While bruising isn't considered a typical lupus skin symptom, many MyLupusTeam members do report unexplained bruise-like marks and sensations. Some describe spots that feel bruised and sore with no visible cause, while others notice marks they can't explain. A few things worth considering and discussing further with your care team:

- Lupus medications, particularly corticosteroids, can make blood vessels more fragile, leading to unusual bruising or discoloration
- Anemia, which affects about half of people with lupus, can contribute to bruising
- Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is a lupus comorbidity that causes easy bruising due to low platelet counts

Since your rheumatologist hasn't seen this before, it may be worth asking for a referral to a dermatologist who could offer a fresh perspective. Photographing any future occurrences immediately would also be really helpful for your doctors.

I get bruises that are sooo painful! They show up usually around my wrist… and they’ll get worse quick but they’ll go away in 2-3 days. It’s awful! I’m glad yours doesn’t cause you pain!!

I have red blotches that may show up on may thighs, or shins. They are inconsistent as to when they may show up and may be months in-berween them. They show up when I get up, they are hot to the touch, itch like crazy, painful, and look like a regular rash. I use itch medication to help with the itchiness. The next morning they are gone.
