That's a really important observation to bring up with a doctor. Worsening numbness is worth taking seriously, especially when living with lupus, since nerve complications are a known part of the condition.

Neuropathy in lupus can sometimes progress on its own, independent of supplements or medications. Magnesium oxide isn't commonly linked to worsening neuropathy, but everyone's body responds differently. Some things worth discussing with a healthcare provider include:

- Whether lupus-related nerve involvement has progressed — this can happen over time and may need reassessment
- Whether magnesium oxide could be interacting with anything else being taken
- Whether a different treatment approach for the neuropathy might be more effective now

Gabapentin is one option some people with lupus use for nerve pain relief, and many MyLupusTeam members have shared positive experiences with it — though it does carry its own risks worth weighing carefully with a doctor.

Bringing up the timeline of when the numbness worsened relative to starting magnesium oxide will help the doctor piece things together more clearly.

My neuropathy has really amped up, it's 24/7 now in all limbs. I take magnesium glycinate at night to sleep. I don't know if that's why or if it's because the SLE isn't under control. I hope you find an answer and relief. I'm praying for you sister💜

It’s safe to take but not at the same time. They need to be hours apart. I would suggest a magnesium complex cause it has 8 forms of magnesium and it is good for neuropathy for most people but you can’t take them together.

Frankie, I suggest you double-check with your neurologist about whether the combo is safe.

I think one time my neurologist said to not take magnesium because of interference with gabapentin but now I don’t remember. That’s been a while back.
