What side effects have others experienced on methotrexate, especially after switching from another medication?

Many MyLupusTeam members have shared positive experiences with methotrexate for lupus. Here are a few:

- "Methotrexate is doing wonders for the joint pain and other lupus symptoms."
- "Flares are remarkably reduced."
- "The swelling around the joint areas has gone down."

That said, it's important to know about potential side effects so you're prepared. Common side effects of methotrexate can include:

- Nausea, vomiting, or upset stomach
- Mouth sores or sore gums
- Fatigue and weakness
- Hair loss
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Decreased appetite
- Skin sensitivity to sunlight
- Weakened immune system

Since methotrexate suppresses the immune system, it's worth discussing your history of abscesses with your doctor, as this could be a relevant factor in choosing the right treatment for you. One helpful tip — taking a folic acid supplement alongside methotrexate can reduce gastrointestinal side effects by a significant amount. Most doctors recommend this, but it's worth confirming with yours.

Always check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking any over-the-counter medications alongside methotrexate, as some common drugs can interact with it and increase side effect risks.

I did take hydroxychloquine, but I got so weak I thought I was gonna have to go to the ER, so my Rheumy took me off! She put me on Methotrexate! I have had bad issues with my whole digestive track from inflammation, even my colon! After about 2 days it seem to all go back to normal, including my bowels! I have been having these problems for about a year! So far, the methotrexate hasn’t caused me any issues! But I feel I need to take it for a while to heal my whole digestive track! Then maybe go off when the doc thinks I should! My Internest told me that after taking it for about a year or two they check your liver issues, etc…Don’t know what the future holds but as of this minute, I’m feeling somewhat better! This is just my experience so far, who knows about in the future on it! 🙂🙂🙂…

I was on methotrexate for a long time, but started getting persistent nausea that couldn’t be remedied. My labs weren’t showing a lot of benefits from having been on it, so it became an issue of quality of life over need of medication. I eventually stopped it.

I was on HCQ but I broke out in a terrible itching spell. Then I was put on Leflunomide and caused the abscess. Now I am trying Methotrexate, but just started 5 days ago. Will see how that works.

I was on Methotrexate and had no side affects per se'...but it caused medically induced cirrhosis of my liver. Unfortunately, they did not catch that right away. But, when they did they moved me to Hydroxychloroquine and that has worked pretty well for me. Best of luck to you as well.
