It sounds like you're dealing with a staph infection that has spread up your arm — that's really serious and needs immediate medical attention if you haven't already sought it.
Having lupus significantly raises the risk of infections like this, for a couple of key reasons:
- Lupus affects the immune system, making it harder to fight off bacteria
- Immunosuppressive medications used to manage lupus can further lower your body's defenses When an infection spreads up the arm (called "tracking"), it can become a medical emergency. Please go to an emergency room or urgent care right away if you haven't already.
Signs that things are getting worse include:
- Increasing redness, warmth, or swelling spreading further up the arm
- Fever or chills
- Red streaks along the arm
- Discharge from the infected area
A doctor will likely need to prescribe antibiotics, and given your lupus and RA, they'll need to carefully consider how treatment interacts with your current medications. Don't wait on this one — infections can escalate quickly when the immune system is already compromised.
