Temperature swings are a really common experience for people with lupus — you're definitely not alone in this! A MyLupusTeam member described it perfectly: "I get the chills so bad I cannot warm up... Now I am sweating, then get chills randomly throughout the day."

There are several reasons why this can happen with lupus:

- Lupus flares — A temperature spike can be an early warning sign that a flare is coming
- Infection — Lupus and its treatments can weaken the immune system, making infections more likely, which can cause fever
- Medication side effects — Corticosteroids in particular can cause sweating and temperature changes
- Raynaud's phenomenon — A lupus-linked condition where blood vessels constrict, causing cold sensations, especially in hands and feet It's worth taking your temperature when these spikes happen. Let your doctor know if a fever doesn't go away, or if it reaches around 101°F or higher — especially if taking immunosuppressive medications, as that's a signal to seek medical advice promptly.

In the meantime, some things that may help include:

- Layering clothing so you can adjust easily
- Staying well hydrated
- Using a fan or space heater to adjust room temperature
- Avoiding extreme heat or cold outdoors
