Muscle stiffness and soreness are really common with lupus, and it can feel so frustrating when you're doing everything "right" and still struggling. The good news is there are some reasons this happens and ways to manage it.
With lupus, inflammation can affect the muscles and joints directly, making stiffness and soreness worse — even with gentle activity like water aerobics. It's also possible that the activity level was a bit too much for where your body is right now. Here are some things worth considering:
- Flare activity — If your lupus is in a flare, exercise can actually make symptoms worse. Resting during flares and resuming activity after is generally recommended.
- Overdoing it — Even well-intentioned exercise can cause more soreness if the intensity is too high. Starting slowly and building up gradually is key.
- Stretching — Stretching before and after activity, and staying hydrated, can help reduce post-exercise soreness.
- Rest balance — Rest is just as important as movement. Pushing through fatigue can set things back.
A rheumatologist or physical therapist who understands lupus can help design a routine that works *with* your body, not against it. It's really worth asking for a referral if you haven't already.
