Hello Lupus team,

Hairloss has been a big issue for me. Has anybody noticed that the side effects of Plaqunil is Hairloss. If so, what can you do to prevent shedding?

I also wear a wig sometimes and it makes me feel better but they are not comfortable. I use a wig cap then spray got to be freeze spray on the cap it makes the wig stick I also have thoughts about it flying off or someone snatching it off my head I know silly and also I have some hair fibers called cabooki. it covers on the spots. I have discoid lupus and it scars therfore my hair will not grow back. Hair loss is an issue for us but their is no way around it. Lupus effects people differently and the only way to solve my hair loss is to get a hair transplant. So covering up is the only way. It's not fun is it and it makes me so sad. Maybe the plaquenil effects our hair and does not effect others. I think it's the plaquenil. The docs don't seem to have an answer so if I cut down on my plaq lesions come up or get bigger so it's really a no win situation and lupus never goes away. It is a Disease and a lifelong one at that. Praying that they will find a cure and quickly. Headbands hair extensions hats wigs or just go bald and be ok with it. I would have shaved my hair but the lesions still show so my wig makes me feel better try it ladies it's gonna be ok. Discoid lesions cause scars when they heal and you need the plaquenil to Help stop that process. SCLE lesions do not scar but can leave pigment changes they are big psoriasis like lesions and you can get the malar rash. If I get a malar rash it will leave scars if I am not attentive to my face. Sle you get the malar which does not leave scars. Some people with sle will have skin involvement so it is different for everyone. So when u see your doc ask him if you have skin involvement they do not like to be questioned I can tell you that because they don't know what will happen. Everyone does know that a hat and sunblock is a must if you are outdoors any time of the year. Sun is not good for lupus patients. So I think about it for an hour a day then I say self get on with the day then we all have to go about our business. I wonder what I am gonna look like tommorrow next year and in 10 years and it's a very ugly disease, I wonder if it affected men more than women if they would find a cure. It has changed my life in every way and I hate it. I am thankful for now that it is not inside I guess. So we can sit around and research and contemplate or you just have to live your life with this disease. Most people do not see what I have because I cover it up with makeup hats clothes. Now if that is not a giveaway for a sick diseased person I don't know what is. So it is an emotionally physchological, awful disease.. be strong and courageous and keep praying for a cure.

I had a head full of hair before I started plaquenil spots started showing at eight months in, yes plaquenil causes hair loss per my pharmacist. The docs don't care they say it does not. I tend to disagree.

I've taking a vitamin supplement called androgen it's made by metagenetics. I'm sure there are other brands too. I also started taking prenatal vitamins and then I got a special shampoo & conditioner I think nioxin. It helped me a lot. I use to have very think beautiful hair and now, I'm still grateful but it has thinned out quite a bit. Good luck!

I think it definitely has to do with the Plaquenil ( I have severe Alopecia ). I just became so disgusted, that I wear A Weave.
