Mouth sores with lupus are really painful — you're definitely not alone in dealing with them. A MyLupusTeam member shared, "Mouth sores are very painful and inhibit eating and drinking." The good news is there are several things that can help.

Here are some home remedies to try:

- Gargle or swish with warm salt water (½ teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water) for up to 10 seconds
- Use a numbing gel or rinse containing benzocaine before eating
- Avoid acidic, spicy, or salty foods that can irritate sores
- Try lysine or folic acid supplements (but check with your doctor first) If home remedies aren't cutting it, a doctor can recommend stronger options, such as:

- Alcohol-free mouthwash or a medicated mouthwash with chlorhexidine or dexamethasone
- A steroid paste or ointment like triamcinolone dental paste
- Corticosteroid pills if topical treatments aren't working

It's also worth using a soft-bristle toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste to protect your mouth. If sores persist or get worse, definitely loop in your rheumatologist — keeping lupus well-controlled is one of the best ways to reduce recurring sores.
