I wear a lot of Columbia SPF 50 shirts. Not cheap, but allows me to got outside more.
Hi Veronica. Good to meet you. Your question is a great one. Getting by on finding the shady spot just doesn't seem to cut it for us because a lot of the times, there are none, and besides, who likes always lurking in shadows and hissing at the sun?!?!. Even sitting in our cars or the rays hitting us through the windows in our home, we need to abide that sun. I hate using so much sunscreen as well, with all the chemicals and such (by the way, if anyone knows of a good brand, please chime in!). Covering up with regular clothes without some kind of sunscreen won't cut it because the sun still penetrates the clothing unless you're wearing a plastic bag lol. And that is just silly.
Sorry, back to your question...I have had great results with SPF clothing. I have a lot of shirts made by HUK (pronounced "hook")....it's a company that makes clothing for fisherman that are out in the elements from sun up to sun down. They are a bit pricey, but for me, I can justify the cost because I can stay out in my garden for 3-4 hours and not even feel the burn of the sun on my skin where that fabric covers. They keep you cool as well. I'm sure there are spf type clothing for better prices, these are just what I have. And they have some cute styles!
Other than shirts, I have A LOT of hats....and yes, there are spf hats as well. When it comes to the legs, I wear a lot of maxi skirts in the summer and hiking pants made for keeping cool while staying protected. Make sure you take stock of any skin that the sun touches....cover it or slather it....even the feet when wearing sandals. We may feel bummed in the beginning to have to cover up all the time and wear big funny hats, but we need to understand that we are more important than our clothes, or the weird looks we may get from wearing sleeves and pants on a 90 degree day. Lupus sucks, but it doesn't define us. We are so much more than that!
I'm sorry that my reply turned into an article. This is my first reply on here. I'm new here too, but I've been diagnosed for 20 years or so. I guess I had a lot to say about clothes lol. Have a great day, Veronica. Good luck finding some cute duds!!
I also wear a long sleeve bathing suit top with a simple cotton tank top underneath. Sit in shade in tank top while swim top air dries. And I reapply a high-numbered suntan lotion every 15-20 minutes. Don't forget to get a cute hat with a wiiiide brim to help shield your face, neck, and back of neck!!
Thanks you🙂
Get you some sun screen when going out in the sun or wear a long sleeve if you don’t you will begin to itch and skin feels like it’s on fire and I will make you fatigued
